sports dictionary Basketball

А Б В Г Д Е Ё Ж З И Й К Л М Н О П Р С Т У Ф Х Ц Ч Ш Щ Ъ Ы Ь Э Ю Я

ALLEY UP parachute, pass reception and throw in one jump. This is a very effective technique that is loved by viewers who come to watch a basketball game. One of the players passes to the other, launching the ball high in the air. When the ball starts to go down, the second player jumps up, catches it and throws it into the basket. It does all this in one jump. If the shield is very close and the pass is addressed accurately, then the attacker literally sticks the ball into the basket, often hanging on to it after an alley-oop. The reception can be performed in another way, without a parachute. The pass may not be as high. Alley-oop is the simultaneous reception of a pass and a throw made in one jump. It looks very impressive, so most players do this during high gears. If the player is very close to the shield, a low pass is enough for him to make such a beautiful reception.

ASSIST a pass after which the ball is successfully thrown into the basket. Its the same as an assist in football. An assist can be compared to an assist in football. Only in basketball, there are a lot more such transfers per game. This is a pass to the partner, after which he throws the ball into the basket. It is important that the player scores the ball immediately after the pass, otherwise the assist will not be counted. For example, if a player receives a pass, then loses the ball, and then gets it back again, then the assist doesnt count anymore, because they didnt receive the ball directly from another player on their team, but during a fight. Of course, an assist is also not possible for free throws and individual passes. If a player receives the ball from an opponent and makes a successful throw, the assist will not be counted.

AXIAL LEG a leg that a basketball player with a ball can lift off the floor only after releasing the ball from his hands. In other words, to move around, he must drive the ball. A basketball player is allowed to perform "strides" and turns, but the movement of the axial leg is possible only if he releases the ball from his hands. Having received the ball in motion, the player must have time to start driving after one or two subsequent steps, otherwise a violation will be recorded. This violation is called running.

BASKETBALL SHIELD this is a must-have equipment for a basketball game. In the rules, its dimensions are defined as 180 by 105 centimeters. Hitting the shield is easy enough, but in most cases it is not necessary. Bouncing the ball off the shield can also occur in the case of an inaccurate throw, when the ball is flying along a higher trajectory than necessary. Interestingly, it may well bounce right into the ring. In this case, the roll is considered successful.

BATBOY (BALLBOY, BALLGEL) these are special people who remove bats thrown by batting players, various foreign objects from the playing field, and also catch balls hit in a foul. Sometimes spectacular jumps for the ball cause a storm of emotions in the entire stadium.

BLOCK SHOT this is stopping the ball on the way to the basket, which is performed according to all the rules. Most often, players block the ball with the palm of their hand. It is forbidden to do this with a fist. Block shots are best performed by tall players with long arms and good coordination. They can jump up to the basket and knock the ball out after it bounces off the handle, or they can block just an overdue throw. It is also not forbidden to knock the ball out of the players hands, but the basketball player must be sure that it will hit the ball.

BUZZER a sound signal that notifies you of the end of a certain time period in the game. This may signal the end of the game or the time to throw. According to the rules of basketball, a team must throw the ball into the basket within 24 seconds of taking possession of the ball. If it does not do so, ownership passes to the other team. To reset the timer, the ball must touch the basket handle. A basketball game consists of quarters. The end of each quarter, as well as the entire game, is also made using a buzzer. There are a few other important rules in basketball. Their violation is also signaled by a buzzer.

CENTER FIELD the fifth number of the team. Plays directly under the ring. This is usually the tallest player in the team. A center player with a height of 210 centimeters. If he has sufficient mobility, he can play a little further from the ring. He is mainly responsible for blocking shots and rebounds. A center fielder rarely fails to make three-point shots. He scores almost all the points from very close range. Sometimes the center is specifically fouled to prevent him from scoring, but to send him to make free throws. The probability that the center will score a free kick twice is significantly less than the probability of throwing the ball into the basket from under the ring.

CENTRALIZE play in the center position, while having a different role. During the entire basketball game, almost every player of the team is directly above the ring at least several times. Even point guards sometimes allow themselves to make a dunk, not to mention attacking forwards. A heavy forward can sometimes change positions with a center player for a short period of time. Practically, the duties of a player under the ring can be performed by any sufficiently tall player who plays well "in the paint".

CONTINUOUS OPERATION a basketball combination in which a team moves from its own half of the field to someone elses, while maintaining its starting position and numerical advantage. This combination is quite easy to perform. All the team players simply rush forward as quickly as possible along a straight trajectory. This way, they keep their positions. Almost all the players of the team are on the same side. Continuous shooting can cause a bit of a stir in the actions of the defending party, especially if it operates on the principle of zone protection. In this case, the usual zones will be empty, while others, on the contrary, will overflow with players.

CONTROVERSIAL THROW one of the ways to introduce the ball into the game. It is performed by tossing the ball over two players from different teams. A disputed throw is awarded immediately after the disputed ball is fixed. The ball is taken by the player who jumped higher than his opponent and was able to pass the ball to his partners. After that, the game resumes. A controversial throw is made in one of three circles on the court. Choose the one that was closest to the situation with the disputed ball.

CROSS PASSAGE a combination in an attack, when two attackers pass forward from different sides past the partner who owns the ball. This is a simple combination in attack. Two attackers pass from different sides. They move diagonally. Finally, they find themselves on the opposite flank. The player with the ball can pass to any of them. This creates a little difficulty for the defenders, as you can get confused with the movement of the attackers and miss at least one of them. Once on the wing, a basketball player can make a throw from there, return the ball back, or try to give it to the center.

CROSSOVER SERVICE a basketball maneuver in which a player dribbles the ball sharply from one hand to the other, making a dash forward or to the side. This is the main basketball feint that allows you to pass the defender and get free space in front. In the classic version, a sharp change of direction of movement is performed with a simultaneous change of the leading hand. The faster this technique is performed, the better. Michael Jordan is known as one of the best performers of this maneuver. With the help of a crossover, the outstanding basketball player circled hundreds of defenders. The secret to success is speed and, of course, technical skill. There are other variations of this maneuver. For example, a double crossover or semi-crossover. They can also be performed in different ways, so this technique has a lot of options for execution.

DEAD BALL a ball that is out of play. These are all game situations in which the ball is considered out of play. First, it is a situation where the ball is thrown into the ring. After that, the defending team picks him up and puts him back in the game. The ball is also considered dead when it goes out of bounds, when the referee blows his whistle, or when the end of a quarter or match is signaled by an audible siren. A dead ball cannot be picked up to quickly resume an attack. This will be considered unsportsmanlike conduct. If play is stopped by the referees whistle, it is the referee who decides when and how the ball will be returned to play.

DELIBERATE FOUL a deliberate violation of the rules. This does not necessarily have to be contact with an opposing player. By committing such a foul, the player practically does not hope that he will be able to avoid punishment. A violation can occur purely on a subconscious level. The most striking example is knocking the ball out of the basket. Multiple intentional fouls can result in a player being removed from the field.

DELIVER (VIA SOMEONE) make a dunk, despite the active protection of the guardian. This is especially offensive for the defending player. Tall players have long hands. This allows them to block shots even when the path to the player with the ball is blocked by their own or someone elses basketball player. However, the more spectacular are the moments when the attacking player hammers the ball into the basket almost together with the hands of the guardian. Such dunks give extra energy to your teammates.

DISPUTED BALL a situation where two players of different teams simultaneously grab a loose ball in a fight for it. The referee may also award a contested ball if the player with the ball is so heavily patronized that he cannot move the ball or pass it to his partner for 5 seconds. The disputed ball is played by throwing it in one of the three circles on the court. To draw a throw, two players of competing teams approach the referee. They compete for a ball thrown vertically into the air by the referee.

DISQUALIFYING FOUL violation, after which a player is removed from the field without being able to return to it. Usually, a player is disqualified for several violations. If the foul was very serious, the referee may decide to remove the player immediately. Removal from the field can be obtained for one clear and gross violation, which was committed on purpose.

DOMINATE (UNDER THE RING) successfully play under the ring, picking up balls and blocking shots. Each team has a player who is called a center. This is the tallest player of the team, who plays directly under the ring. A lot really depends on his height and ability to fight on the second floor, because he is responsible for picking up the ball. His great height also allows him to kick the ball out from under the ring and score spectacular dunks himself. Dominating under the ring means often winning on rebounds and making successful block shots. Perhaps, players with a height of more than 210 cm can play most successfully in the center position.

DOUBLE BARRIER a move in which two players of a team block a teammate in possession of the ball.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE double-digit performance of a basketball player in one match. Basketball is a game with an abundance of statistics. Each player records a large number of game moves that they have completed. Basketball stats include points, assists, rebounds, steals, and blocked shots. If a player has achieved a double-digit score in two indicators in one match, this is called a double-double. That is, double double-digit performance. Such game activity is automatically equated to a good game of a basketball player. The best players in basketball history complete 500-700 double-doubles in their entire career. They are mostly recorded in the points-assists and points-rebounds combinations.

DRIVING THE BALL (DRIBBLING) a mandatory game technique in basketball. Players advance with the ball by hitting it successively on the floor with their right or left hand. In this way, the player can move in any direction. The maintenance process should be permanent. While the player is driving the ball, he can move in any direction or stand still. If he stops dribbling and catches the ball, he is not allowed to move more than three steps with it. After catching the ball, the player can also not run forward with it without leading. This is a mandatory game move and failure to do so immediately triggers an immediate referees whistle. This is why so much attention is paid to driving the ball in basketball players training sessions. Every professional player is quite good at driving the ball, but you can improve in this game technique all your career.

DUAL MANAGEMENT resuming dribbling after the player has picked up the ball. It is considered an error. Double leading is the simultaneous fixation of the ball with two hands twice in a row. According to the rules of basketball, any player has the right to move with the ball as long as he fills it on the floor. It should do this continuously. If a player stops dribbling and takes the ball with both hands, he must give the ball to his partner or make a throw. If the player resumes the game again after stopping the game, this is a violation of the rules. In this case, the ball is awarded to the other team. This mistake is usually made by inexperienced basketball players. In fact, it can be performed by any player, as you can forget about this rule during the game. This is especially easy to do if the player is in a hurry to attack.

DUNK a type of throw in basketball, in which basketball players jump high up and throw the ball through the ring with one or two hands. The basketball players hands are directly next to the basket, so that, figuratively speaking, he puts the ball in the basket, often hanging on to it after that to increase the entertainment. The dunk is without a doubt the most beautiful type of throw in basketball. All fans of this sport love dunks. There are separate ratings that record the most beautiful dunks in history, as well as the players who made the most such shots. For such a throw, the team gets 2 points. The most important thing when performing a dunk is the need to jump high to get over the basket and literally stick the ball in it. Accordingly, the higher the player is, the easier it is for him to perform a dunk. This roll has many types. It is dunks that best raise the morale of the team, as well as cause the most vivid emotions in the audience.

FACIAL LINES lines behind basketball boards that limit the length of the court. These lines are used to explicitly indicate where the playground ends. In basketball, it is allowed to enter the ball from behind the face. For example, if the ball is successfully thrown, the defending team enters from the front line. After an out, the ball is entered into play by the team that did not touch the ball last. The length of the professional basketball court is 18 meters. The field is limited to two side lines and two front lines.

FAST BREAKOUT quick exit of the attackers to the opponents basket in order to create a numerical advantage and throw the ball. The size of a basketball field is significantly smaller than that of a football field, for example. Teams can organize attacks much faster, and the creation of new moments is incredibly fast. Its the same with attacks that can be played out in seconds in basketball. Basically, quick breakthroughs are organized when the other team loses the ball or makes a mistake at some point in the game. In this respect, basketball is similar to football, where a mistake by one team leads to a counterattack by the other. The success of such an attack depends directly on its speed.

FEINT a false maneuver to mislead the defender. Feint is a deceptive action. In basketball, it is simply impossible to act without feints. To increase the effectiveness of attacking actions (during passes, throws, or passes), basketball players use various feints. For example, a sharp 180 or 360 degree turn, an unexpected change in the leading hand, false swings during throws or passes — all these are feints. There are a lot of feints in basketball. Sometimes they are invented by individual talented players, and sometimes they are well-known maneuvers that have been popular for many years.

FIRST GEAR a pass that is performed immediately after successful possession of the ball on the rebound. It is this transfer that largely determines how high-quality a quick breakthrough to the enemys ring will be. Since the basketball court itself is quite compact, the team can organize an attack in just a few seconds. To do this, the first pass must be perfectly accurate, and the player who receives the ball must also act very quickly. The first pass can be compared to the pass in football, which the defender gives to the attacking side at the moment when his team counterattacks. The accuracy and speed of this transmission determines whether the attack is dangerous.

FIRST NUMBER the teams point guard. Previously, in basketball, the point guard performed only passes to partners, and he did not participate in scoring points. His duties also included the guardianship of the opponents players playing near him. Over time, the role of point guard or first number has become more free. Now he can participate in the final shots of the team. Usually this basketball player has an excellent shot from a long distance. He also gives very accurate passes to partners, because this remains his main activity on the site.

FIVE BY FIVE a player sets five or more points in all five statistics. A lightweight version of the quintuple double, which is completely unattainable in professional basketball. Five-by-five has been performed a little more than a dozen times in the history of this sport. Of course, this is always a very significant achievement for the player. For example, 5 steals in one game is considered a very high score. The whole difficulty in such an achievement is that the player needs to be a universal fighter and be able to perform absolutely all game techniques at the highest level. Hakeem Olajuwon is a great basketball player who has completed a record number of 5-by-5s in history six times.

FLY SWATTER a very tall basketball player, who usually performs great block shots, but is not so good at other techniques. The huge height and long limbs make it possible for such a player to block many of the shots that fly into his basket. Also, this basketball player is excellent at picking up the ball at the ring. Although basketball is primarily an American game, this word originated among Russian fans and is used only by them. The fly here is the ball, and the player seems to be able to knock it out of the hands of other basketball players well, for which he received this characteristic.

FOUL error when contacting an opponent. This can be a push, a punch, or any other action prohibited by the rules. In basketball, there are many restrictions that apply to the contact of players from different teams. It is forbidden to hit the opponent with your hands, feet, push him, hold him by the shirt or in any other way interfere with his progress. It is not forbidden only to put the case in its path. For example, when holding a barrier, but the player must remain motionless during contact with the opponent. Violation of the rules is followed by a penalty. If the victim was not going to make a throw, then usually the team just throws the ball in. If the throw was prepared for execution or was completed, the team receives several free throws.

FOUL ON A THROW violation of the rules on another player at the moment when he was making a throw. This is a personal foul on a certain player, but it is at the moment of the throw to the basket. If the ball goes wrong, one penalty is awarded. If it does not hit, it is assigned as many points as the team would have scored on a successful hit (i.e. two or three). As a rule, defenders try to prevent opponents from making a throw. This is why there are so many similar fouls.

FOUR-POINT ATTACK a teams attack during which a player made a successful three-point shot with a foul, earned the right to a free throw and converted it. This is the maximum number of points that can be scored in a single attack. If a player throws the ball from behind the three-point arc and hits it, then his team already gets three points, and if he is also fouled, then the realized penalty will bring one more point and four in total.

FREE BALL a ball in play that is not owned by either team. The "loose ball" situation may occur on the basketball court due to the loss of the ball during the lead, inaccurate passing, etc. As a rule, after 1-2 seconds, the player closest to the ball takes possession of it. Such a fight can be won by a fast and agile player who has an advantage in speed. That is why the players of the back line of their teams offense are mainly fighting for free balls. The referee may award a disputed ball if both players have broken the rules during the fight.

FREE THROW penalty in basketball for a personal or technical foul. Most often, the injured player makes two throws. To do this, he moves to the free kick line, which is located 4.60 m from the shield. For each hit, the team gets one point. Free throws are awarded if a foul in any way interferes with the capture of the basket or if the opposing team has reached the limit of non-breaking fouls.

FREE THROW AREA game area in the form of a trapezoid with a semicircle at its top. The base of the trapezoid is located on the front line and is 6 meters long. Its top is the free throw line, which is only 3.60 meters wide. Thus, the area expands as you approach the ring. Any attacking player can stay in this zone for no more than three seconds if his team is currently attacking and is on the opponents side. A circle is drawn at the top of the area. Its diameter is 3.60 m, which is identical to the penalty line, which is located in the middle of this circle. This area allows you to clearly identify the line from which basketball players make free throws.

FROM THE SHIELD (FENCE) 1) a throw to the basket, in which the basketball player expects to throw the ball with a rebound from the shield; 2) a rebound of the ball from the shield, after which it returns to the field.

GAME TECHNIQUES game skills that a player who wants to play basketball successfully must possess. Each sport has its own basic techniques. In basketball, these are shots, passes, interceptions, catching the ball, fast forward passes, fighting for the ball in the air and under the ring, blocks and guarding opponents. Of course, the player does not have to master everything perfectly. Depending on the role of a basketball player, they are better at some of them, but a professional basketball player should be able to do everything. For example, a center fielder simply has to pick up the ball well under the ring and throw balls that are close to the basket himself. A backline player is valued for his ability to pass well, as well as make shots from medium and long distances. For an attacking defender, it is extremely important to be able to take care of the opponent, as well as to make breakthroughs to the ring itself.

GET STUCK IN THE PAINT the tendency of a basketball player to break the rules by staying more than three seconds in a rectangular area under the ring in the opponents half of the field when his team has possession of the ball in the offensive zone. Paint in basketball refers to the area directly under the ring. Any attack player is forbidden to stay there for more than three seconds, which is a violation of the game. Getting stuck in the paint means staying in this area longer than you should. Some players are assigned such a feature as too frequent violations when they are in the paint.

HEAVY FORWARD position in a basketball game. A heavy forward does mostly power work, so he is primarily focused on defense. This is a player with a height of 200-210 centimeters and large dimensions. His main techniques in the game are rebounds and block shots. For their successful implementation, you need to have good growth, strength and endurance. A heavy forward can complete the teams attacks by putting the ball in the basket. Some players in this position score 20-25 points per game. Players of this role can take good care of opponents near the ring, put up barriers and perform all the techniques that require the use of force within the rules.

HIDDEN TRANSMISSION passing the ball, in which the player hides the direction of the attack until the last moment. In basketball, you can distinguish transfers that are obvious in their direction. Defenders are always prepared for them to a certain extent. Only the speed of such passes can create difficulties. To deceive the defenders, you have to go to more serious maneuvers. For example, hide the transmission direction until the last one. The player can simulate a throw in one direction, and give the ball completely in the other. To do this, he will need to quickly turn around in the other direction. As a rule, the skill of fast passes is possessed by point guards. They are the ones who most often perform such maneuvers.

HOLLINGER RATING (PER) developed by John Hollinger, a system for evaluating the usefulness of a player. This person, based on some formulas, developed a system that allows you to evaluate the players rating. Positive and negative game actions are taken into account. The disadvantages of the system include the fact that it determines the players rating mainly by successful actions in the attack. At the top of this ranking are legendary basketball players Michael Jordan and LeBron James. Even if they are eventually moved down from the top, it is almost certain that these legends will remain in the top 10 most useful NBA players.

HOOK THROW throw in a circular motion with one hand over your head. This throw differs at least in that it is performed with one hand. It is also performed, as a rule, in a jump. Such a throw allows you to throw the ball into the basket, even if the space ahead is blocked by opponents. Any defender, of course, expects a normal two-handed shot. When performing a circular motion, one hand first seems to be brought back, and then rises up and pushes the ball out of the hand towards the basket. This technique of throwing allows you to deceive your opponents a little. Of the disadvantages of the hook throw, it is worth noting its not always high accuracy. A one-handed throw is generally much more inaccurate than a normal one, but the ball is flying along a high trajectory, so there is a chance that even with an inaccurate throw, the ball from the basket handle will hit the target accurately.

INDIVIDUAL FOUL this is a violation related to personal contact with another player. This can be pushing with your hands or something else. After 5 (or 6) such fouls, the game ends for the basketball player. A direct disqualifying foul is a blatant violation of the rules or outright unsportsmanlike conduct. Such a foul can be received not only by players of the main team, but also by substitute players, coaches, and team representatives.

INTERCEPT actions of a defensive player that lead to the fact that he takes possession of the ball. Interception in basketball can be done in different ways. First, it can be done during the transfer, blocking the opponents path to the ball and picking it up yourself. Secondly, you can intercept the ball when the opponent is driving it. Interception allows you to quickly organize a counterattack and score easy points. In basketball, interceptions are mostly handled by the teams backline players. These are point guards, attacking defenders and light forwards. In addition to them, this is sometimes done by center players. An average of 1.5 2 steals per game is considered a very good indicator.

JOGGING running with a ball in your hands. In basketball, there are strict rules according to which a player cannot run with the ball in his hands. To move around, he must hit the ball on the floor. After receiving the ball in motion, the basketball player is allowed to take only 2 steps with it. After that, he must switch to driving, pass to another player, or make a throw. Also, when starting a basketball game, the player must first release the ball from his hands, and only then lift the axial leg off the floor. This is another rule that brings more dynamics to the game.

JORDANS RULES special defensive strategy games that the Detroit Pistons used against Michael Jordan. Its essence was to protect Michael as much as possible, significantly reducing his ability to attack. Jordan played as an attacking defender and scored a decent number of points in each game. He performed a huge number of slam dunks, breaking into the three-second zone. The strategy involved double or even triple custody for Jordan. Then this scheme was applied against some other productive defenders, whose attacking power needed to be limited. The strategy was successful at an early stage of its development. Later, the coach of Michaels team managed to develop a new game scheme and its effectiveness fell. The strategy was also used by other teams that played against Jordan, but with much less success.

JUMP SHOT a game technique in which a basketball player throws the ball into the basket while in the air. A lot of shots in basketball are made in the jump. This is logical, because the basketball basket is located about three meters above the court, and the jump reduces the distance to the shield. For example, a three-point shot is almost always performed with a slight bounce. Also, all close-range throws are usually performed with a jump. A jump shot can also be completed by taking a pass at the same time. This technique is called alley-up and all basketball fans really like it. Jump shots also include a slam dunk-a very close jump shot to the basket, in which a basketball player practically puts his hand with the ball in the basket.

LAST-DITCH FOUL violation of the rules (usually at the very end of the match), when a player deliberately goes for a foul in order to save the team and prevent the opponent from throwing the ball into the basket. This foul can be absolutely of any nature. This can be a push, kick, or deliberate interference with the ball. As a rule, this throw decides or can decide the fate of the match, which is why players go to such desperate actions.

LAY-UP SERVICE a close-range shot. This is what American commentators call shots from close to the basket. For a successful throw, the team gets two points. However, this is not a dunk when a player puts the ball in the ring, but a throw. Usually, after such throws, the ball successfully flies into the ring, if, of course, nothing prevented the player from making the throw. The opponent can defend quite well, and it is not very easy to perform a dunk in such cases. Therefore, players go for a less reliable, but acceptable two-point shot.

LIGHT FORWARD a player on the basketball court who plays in the front line of his teams attack. The main task of a light forward on the field is to collect points. On average, basketball players in this role have a height of 200-210 cm, which means that they can play well at the ring, perform rebounds and block shots. Light forwards, as a rule, have an accurate shot from almost all distances, including from behind the three-point line. Due to their tall stature, these basketball players often complete attacks, perform dunks, and compete for the ball near the ring. They are also very mobile. The attacking defender and light forward are the fastest players on the team, who can make instant breakthroughs and drive the ball well.

LIVE BALL situations in basketball where the ball is brought into play. The ball is considered alive in all situations when the players or the referee are ready to put the ball into play. For example, when a controversial throw is played, the ball becomes alive at the moment when the referee is ready to play it. When a round is thrown from an out, it becomes alive as soon as it is picked up by the basketball player who will bring the ball into play. A live ball is the opposite of a dead one. They fight for it, pass it to partners, lead it, throw it in the basket, and so on. It is with a live ball that all game actions performed by players are counted.

MIXED PROTECTION protection that combines the standards of personal and zone custody of opponents. For example, three players can play in zones, and two can play individually against some players. What does this method of custody provide? It allows you to increase control over certain basketball players and at the same time maintain a certain order. Regular (not mixed) versions have a number of disadvantages. For example, with personal protection, the game may become chaotic. A lot will depend on the movement of the attackers. Zone protection adds more order, but it can give too much freedom to individual players.

MULTIPLE FOUL a foul committed by several players on the same team at the same time. This is possible when you come in contact with an opponent. For example, two players may not act according to the rules against an opponent at the same time. The injured party is awarded 2 free throws, and each of the perpetrators receives a foul. Thus, a team can immediately get 2-3 team fouls. You can repeatedly make a foul if you act against one or more opposing players. For example, one basketball player can hold one opponent, and the second can hold another. In this case, they will both receive personal comments.

MUTUAL FOUL a simultaneous mistake made by two players of opposite teams in relation to each other. In basketball, as in any other game sport, it is quite possible for both players to break the rules against each other. For example, when both are holding each others hands or grabbing each others T-shirt. In the event of a mutual foul, no free throws are awarded to anyone. Both players receive personal comments, and the ball remains with those who owned it at the time of the violation. If the referee deems it necessary, he can announce the draw of the disputed ball.

NUMBER FIVE center player. As a rule, the tallest basketball player playing directly under the ring. Actively participates in attack and defense, and must avoid violating the three-second rule. The center is the best at picking up the ball and starting the attack with the first pass. Due to their high stature, this player can also perform spectacular dunks. He is a very useful player for his team. Due to his height, he can also be quite good at blocking shots.

NUMBER FOUR heavy forward. A player from two meters away who is mainly focused on defending his own half of the field. Although he is sometimes involved in finishing attacks, his main job on the court is to pick up the ball, tightly guarding opponents rushing into the three-second zone. Due to their tall stature and long arms, such players can block the ball quite well. In general, the heavy forward has much less speed and agility than his comrades in the back line, so he does a lot of power work on the field.

NUMBER THREE easy forward. A fast and fairly high player, whose main task is to collect points. Paired with an attacking midfielder, this basketball player can score the lions share of points for his team. Light forwards usually have a height of 2 meters, which allows them to easily make dunks, fight for rebounds and play defense. Still, most of the players in this role are focused on the attack. The light forward has good speed and an accurate shot from almost any distance. One of the most famous players in this role is LeBron James.

OUT the ball goes out of the playing area. It should be noted that basketball has its own rules for the interpretation of outs. For example, it is fixed if the ball hits a player who is out. Touching the floor behind the playing area is also an out, as is touching any object outside the field. Possession of the ball after an out is awarded to the team whose players were not the last to touch the ball before it was released. As can be seen from these rules, if the ball has gone out of the playing area, but has not yet touched the floor, it is not technically out.

OVERLOAD game maneuver in attack, when four attackers move to one side of the court. A maneuver in which all players on a team (usually with the exception of the basketball player directly in possession of the ball) move to one half of the court. Thus, they form a total numerical advantage in this part of the field. Now it is more likely that one of the four partners will be able to take possession of the ball after a pass from their teammate. The advantage of this shift can also be that if one of them gets the ball, the rest can run to different corners of the court, discouraging the defense. With a simultaneous and well-coordinated shift to one side of the court, opponents usually do not have time to completely cover each player, so a competent transfer can deliver the ball to one of their partners, and he will continue the attack or make a throw.

PASSING THE BALL violation of the rules when a player holds the ball in his hand. There are different ways to break the rules in this case. For example, if a basketball player takes too many steps with the ball in his hand, then such a pass is similar to running. An error can also occur if a player performs double dribbling. After hitting the ball on the floor, he holds the ball in his hand for a short time, after which he starts driving it again. This is considered an error. The referee determines whether the player held up the ball or not. Only he makes a decision on such game episodes.

PERSONAL FOUL violation of the rules by one player due to contact with an opponent. In basketball, it is forbidden to hit another player with your hands or feet, block him, hold him by the shirt, push or otherwise interfere with his movement. It is forbidden to trip or play rough. For any of these actions, the basketball player receives a personal comment, which is recorded in his name. If a player commits a total of 5 (or 6) personal fouls per game, he is removed from the field and replaced by another player. Players can break the rules simultaneously against each other. This is called a mutual foul. In this case, they both receive comments, and the ball goes to the team that last owned it.

PERSONAL PROTECTION defensive actions against a specific player of another team. Before the match, the team receives coaching instructions. It also decides who will play against whom. That is, which player to assign each individual basketball player to. This is an important decision, and the success of the game largely depends on it. Each teams basketball player can be instructed to be particularly active against one particular player on the other team. This means that in defense, he will constantly take care of him, and much more actively than others. Personal protection means constant movement behind the protected player, active counteraction to his throws and passes, etc.

PICK AND ROLL an offensive combination in which a player moves towards a teammate, after which he puts a barrier to the defender. Then there are several possible scenarios. In essence, the defender is forced to choose who to switch to. If he remains in charge of the player with the ball, then his friend who made the barrier starts a dash to the ring and as a result can get a pass and throw the ball into the basket. If the defender switches to blocking, then the basketball player with the ball has free space. He can use this to throw or pass to another partner. There is no perfect defense against this technique. Perhaps this is the reason why the combination is very popular. Some techniques, of course, help to reduce the effect of this technique. For example, they include trading and slipping, but to neutralize a dangerous attack, they must be performed perfectly.

PICK OF THE DRAFT procedure for selecting a new player by a professional team during the draft. In the draft, teams have the opportunity to add new players to their ranks who do not have any active contracts with any team in the league. Usually, the ability to select players is first given to outsiders of the league. The champion chooses the players last. This is done in order to allow weak teams to get young and promising players, thus strengthening their squad. Players who are graduates of high schools, colleges, and youth teams can participate in the draft. Sometimes they can be experienced players who have previously played in another country for another professional team.

PIVOT POINT a game technique in which the player changes the direction of his movement by turning by stepping over with his free foot. To perform this technique, the basketball player must put his axial leg forward just before performing it, and then turn around, stepping over the other in the chosen direction. The maneuver can be performed with or without the ball. The goal is to deceive the defender and make him incapacitated for a short time. The most important thing when executing a pivot is speed, since a slow move is easily calculated by defenders. There are different versions of this maneuver. They are performed in various situations. The best technique is performed by light players who are good at dribbling.

POINT GUARD the first number or point guard of your team. The team manager, its playmaker and the main passer on the field are all point guards. The basketball player who sees the situation on the field better than anyone else knows the strengths and weaknesses of both his own team and someone elses. He has to analyze the game more than anyone else and actually build it himself. The point guard is usually the lowest ranked player on the team. This allows him to be extremely agile and fast in handling the ball. Point guards are able to break through to the ring incredibly quickly, developing great speed. They rarely complete attacks themselves, but if their height allows, they can also make dunks or throws from a distance. The main game technique of such a player is an assist.

POLUKRYUK a type of throw in basketball, which is a simplified hook. A half-side throw to the ring is performed. The movement of the hand with the ball is absolutely the same as with a normal hook, but the amplitude is much smaller. Thus, the roll was named in such a way as to somehow distinguish it from all the others. The lateral rotation of the hand makes the half-hook different from all other ways to throw the ball. This technique is effective only within the three-second zone. From afar, it is very difficult to perform an accurate half-hook.

POSITIONAL ATTACK medium-or low-tempo attacks where players maintain a certain alignment on the field. The main difficulty of a positional attack is to beat the opponents organized defense. In such attacks, the speed of decisions is much lower. Accuracy of passes and the ability to play high-quality combinations are much more important. In a positional attack, a lot falls on the shoulders of the point guard, who, in general, leads partners to favorable positions. Such attacks in basketball are very similar to football. There, too, you can go on a quick counterattack, or you can attack positionally. The second option is always slower. With him, all the defenders are in their places, and you can beat them only through good team actions.

PRESSURE a tight and active defense that is organized in order to force attackers to make mistakes. Adds additional nervousness to the actions of the attacking side. Usually, a team can count on free possession of the ball in their own half of the field. But in case of pressure, the opponents actively counteract even in the opponents half. This forces the attackers to move faster, which increases the chance of making mistakes and losing the ball. Intercepting the ball in the wrong half of the field is an incredibly successful action that almost always leads to scoring points. Pressure requires a lot of effort from the team that uses it. Therefore, it is usually held at the end of the game, when you need to catch up with the opponent on points.

PREVENTING THE BALL FROM HITTING blocking a throw is not according to the rules. In basketball, there are clear rules about how to block the ball. For example, it says that if the ball is flying on a descending trajectory and is completely above the level of the ring, then the player does not have the right to touch it and change the trajectory of its movement. If the referee detects an interference, the team that made the throw gets points, regardless of whether the ball hit the basket or not. She gets as many points as she would have received if she had successfully hit the ring. Interference is not considered if the ball has already touched the basket or is no longer able to hit it. This rule does not allow players to knock out accurate shots from the basket. It is also forbidden to put your hand in the ring to prevent the ball from falling into it.

QUAD-DOUBLE quadruple take. An incredible achievement in basketball, which consists of gaining a double-digit value in four game indicators by one player in one match. In the NBA, this achievement has been possible since 1973, when they introduced the counting of new game techniques. In total, there are 5 actions in basketball that are counted for each individual player. These are points, assists, rebounds, steals, and blocks. Depending on the role of a basketball player, he can gain statistics well in those techniques that he knows very well. However, to score a double-digit value in four of them is extremely rare, which indicates an incredible game skill of a basketball player. This is an achievement that was recorded in basketball on average once every few years. A quadruple-double is an incredible achievement that can be compared to a triple hat-trick in a football match. As a rule, for such an achievement, a player needed to show his best game in life and be on the field all the playing time. Also in the history of basketball, there are dozens of cases when players lacked quite a bit before such a great achievement.

QUINTUPLE-DOUBLE a player sets a double-digit value for a match in all five game actions that are being counted. The highest personal achievement in basketball, which can be obtained in one match. Currently, in the history of professional basketball, not a single case of performing a quintuple-double is recorded. In fact, at the level of a professional game, it seems impossible to do this. Each player has his own role on the field, so he simply cannot perform all actions equally actively. For example, a player can score points very well, perform steals and passes. But it wont participate in ad blocks at all. This is not his fault, as it should be on a professional level. Therefore, this achievement may remain unconquered. In amateur basketball, however, there are cases of achieving a quintuple-double. It is known for certain that quintuple-doubles were recorded in the matches of the school championship of the USA among girls in 1997 and 2012.

RETRACT THE TRAJECTORY throw the ball so that it flies along a high trajectory (launch a parachute). This is a pass or throw to the basket, in which the ball rises sharply up. At the same time, it is relatively short in length. The disadvantages of such a throw include the fact that it can be easily knocked out from under the ring. Basically, the trajectory is lifted with some gears. Passing along a high trajectory allows tall players to compete for the ball. It may be appropriate if the team has players who can fight for high balls. Having won such a ball, the player practically guarantees himself a successful hit in the basket. When parachuting, you can often observe the so-called alley-up. This is a jump shot in which the player simultaneously takes the ball and performs a dunk.

ROLL WITH THE SIREN a basketball throw that is immediately followed by the sound of a siren announcing the end of a quarter or the entire game. This is a throw just before the end of the quarter. Usually in basketball, only important shots that occurred during this time period are noticed. For example, a shot that compares the score and puts the game in overtime, or a winning shot in the last seconds. One roll with the siren can turn the course of the entire match. Fans really love these endings.

SAFETY NET move the defender in the direction of possible movement of the attacking player, who is being taken care of by a teammate. This is a protective action that is carried out, no matter how obvious it may sound, to insure your partner. If the attacker manages to pass the first player, then it will be much more difficult to do this with the second player. To get around one defender, the basketball player has to go for a feint or a jerk. During these movements, he lets go of the ball a little. If the defender insures his teammate, he can take the ball away from the opponent. At a minimum, it will not allow the attacker to quickly break through, and this is also important. To perform a safety net, the defense must have a numerical advantage. Also, this technique can be used when you need to strenuously take care of a particularly dangerous opponents player. For this purpose, the defender can leave his ward for a few seconds and perform a safety net.

SCORE WITH A FOUL successfully throw the ball into the basket, while achieving a foul on yourself, which makes it possible to make a free throw. If a basketball player throws the ball into the basket and is fouled, the throw counts. It is awarded the required number of points, but at the same time the player gets the right to a free throw, which can bring him additional points. To score with a foul means to get at least two points, and potentially one more. A foul can be committed at the moment of a jump or throw.

SECOND NUMBER position of the attacking defender. The attacking defender in basketball has two main goals on the court: to attack himself and actively take care of the opponents players, who can be dangerous in attack. A player in this role usually has a good dribble, accurate pass, and also knows how to complete attacks and score points on his own. Very often in basketball, attacking defenders became the main players who brought points to their team. Well-known basketball player Michael Jordan once played in this position. The average height of a player in the attacking defender position is 190-200 cm, but sometimes shorter players also play in this position.

SHACKLE metal frame of the basket that basketball players throw the ball into. The shackle can help or prevent a player from throwing the ball. A ricochet from it can send the ball into the ring, or it can also work as a block, hitting the ball back into the field. Players even sometimes interact with the shackle, for example, when performing dunks, when basketball players put the ball in the ring. As already mentioned, the shackle can work as an additional blocking element, or it can also correct the ball in the ring. It all depends on the angle at which the ball will fly away from it.

SHOOTER GAME a team player who specializes in three-point shots. Most often, this quality is attributed to the point guard or attacking defender. They play farthest from the basket, have excellent leadership and throwing technique. These qualities help not only to give good passes, but also sometimes to make shots from a long distance. Three-point shots always delight the audience. But to complete them, you need to train the throw from a long distance well. It is the point guards who devote a lot of time to this aspect in training. But that doesnt mean that other players on the team cant have the same skills.

SLAM DUNK a spectacular dunk, which causes delight among the fans. The dunk is considered the most spectacular shot in basketball. During its execution, the player drives the ball into the basket. Such hits earn two points. Often, it is such shots that raise the morale of the team. A slam dunk is usually called any beautiful dunk. There are a lot of options for completing this roll, so each roll is not like the previous one. Especially beautiful dunks cause a lot of admiration. Such shots can be remembered for a long time, and can be included in a variety of collections of the best dunks.

SLIPPAGE a defensive technique that allows you to neutralize the possible negative consequences of an opponents barrier. It consists in the fact that the player who is being blocked takes a sharp step, and the partner slips into the space that appears. He rushes after the opponent who owns the ball. The blocker is not allowed to move during contact with the opponent to avoid a foul. This can be used by the player against whom the barrier is placed. He quickly moves back and now a partner quickly slips between him and the barrier, which continues the guardianship of the player for whom the barrier was organized. Thus, all attackers remain under the control of the defenders and the barrier effect is nullified.

STRIKER 1) a player of the team that owns the ball; 2) the role of an attacking player. Any basketball player of the team with a ball can be called a forward. From the point of view of basketball rules, this will be correct. More often, this word means a player who actually has the role of an attacker. In general, there are positions of light and heavy forward in basketball. In any case, these positions are played by basketball players from 195 cm in height. Attackers have a good, accurate shot from almost any distance. They also actively play near their ring, blocking and picking up balls.

SWITCHING OVER a defensive maneuver in which two defenders switch between the players they are protecting. This maneuver is sometimes required when one of the defenders can no longer follow his charge. If this happens, the teammate temporarily assumes custody of this player, and the first defender starts playing against the basketball player who was taken care of by his teammate. This exchange is carried out for a short time, usually for one game episode. Also, switching forces the opponent to adapt to the game with a new guardian, and this requires a certain amount of time.

TEAM FOULS fouls that count as team fouls. This can lead to various additional penalties. A personal foul by any basketball player on the team automatically records one team foul for the entire team. Team fouls count every quarter. For example, if a team commits 5 fouls, this results in an increased number of free throws. For example, if a foul is committed on an opponent who did not intend to throw the ball, the usual penalty is to throw the ball in and pass it to the other team. However, if a team scores more than five fouls in a quarter, the opponent is entitled to two free throws for absolutely any foul, which is a more significant penalty.

TECHNICAL FOUL intentional violation or unsportsmanlike conduct. A technical foul is awarded if the referee notices that a player commits a violation specifically to achieve certain goals or simply delay the game. The penalty for this is several free throws. The coach, team personnel, or bench players may also receive a technical foul. A few technical fouls can result in you being removed from the court. Unsportsmanlike conduct is a serious penalty in basketball, so a technical foul may result in disqualification.

THE 14-SECOND RULE time to re-attack in basketball. Initially, in basketball, you are given 24 seconds to complete a throw to the basket. If there are less than 14 seconds left before the end of the timer and the defenders foul, the team is entitled to a new attack. The timer starts counting down for 14 seconds, so the game situation is recreated as accurately as possible and the attacking team gets the right to launch a positional attack. There are also 14 seconds left for an attack if the team made a shot, but did not throw the ball into the basket. Previously, after a pick-up, the counter was reset and the attack again had 24 seconds. However, in order to increase the dynamics and entertainment, it was decided to reduce the time for a repeat attack.

THE 24-SECOND RULE one of the basketball rules, which is that a team must make a throw to the basket within 24 seconds after the start of possession of the ball. This rule allows the game to develop dynamically, and teams-not to delay attacks. If the ball is out of bounds, the 24-second counter stops and resumes when the round is put into play. If the ball touches the basket handle, the counter is reset and the team has another 14 seconds for the next shot. In case of violation of the rule, the ball goes to the opponent.

THE 3-SECOND RULE a rule that prohibits any player on the offensive team from being in the free throw zone for more than three seconds. Naturally, only with a live ball. There are only two exceptions to this rule, and no violation will be recorded. The first is if a basketball player tries to leave the zone at a time when he has already been in it for more than three seconds. The second is if the player directly attacks the basket. The rule was introduced a long time ago. It makes the game more dynamic in attack. With its introduction, tall players lost the ability to specifically stand in this zone and wait for a pass to perform a close-range throw or dunk.

THE 5-SECOND RULE the time that is given to a player to bring the ball into play, perform a free kick or free kick. The countdown starts from the moment when the player picked up the ball. It is since then that he is considered alive. Why is this rule even introduced in the game? Like all other rules, this allows you to make the game faster and not spend a lot of time on free throws and outs. Players are also very interested in completing it, because if they delay and spend more than the allotted time, the ball goes to the opponent, and the free throw is not counted. The player who makes the free throw has only 5 seconds to aim and throw.

THREE-POINT SHOT a throw in basketball, for which three points are awarded in case of hitting the basket. On the basketball court there is a three-point line, which is drawn in a semicircle approximately at a distance of 6.25 meters from the shield. A successful throw from outside the goal area earns the team 3 points. The ability to make three-point shots is an important quality for all backline players. This allows you to complete the attack, even if its further development is not visible. It is worth noting that a three-pointer is a very unreliable shot. Not every shot from behind the line earns the team points, but it is often the only correct decision. For example, when teammates are patronized too tightly and there is no way to pass to any of them.

THREE-SECOND ZONE the free throw zone on the basketball court, which is a trapezoid. This is the square directly next to the ring. Any attacking player is prohibited from being in the wrong penalty area for more than three seconds when the ball is in play. An exception is made if the player is about to exit it or attacks the ring. The rule was introduced in order to prevent high players from constantly staying in this zone, waiting for a transfer from their partners. This innovation has made the game more dynamic, forcing players to constantly move around.

TIME OUT a one-minute break in the game, which is taken at the request of the coach or his assistant. A time-out can only be given if all the rules are met for this purpose. For example, the ball should not be in play. A coach can also ask for a time-out if a ball has just been thrown into his teams basket. He has a minute to give the players some instructions. Of course, the opponent can also use the timeout for their own purposes. During the first half of the match, the team is given two time-outs. During the second half of three. However, it is forbidden to use more than two timeouts in the last two minutes of the game.

TIME TO ATTACK the interval in the game during which the team must complete its attack. To make an attack means to make a throw to the basket. It doesnt matter if its successful or not. According to the rules of basketball, a team is given 24 seconds to make a throw to the basket from the moment it takes possession of the ball. After hitting the shackle, the timer is reset, and a second attack is given 14 seconds. This rule was introduced in basketball to make the game more dynamic. The audience and the players themselves get a more intense game with an abundance of short attacks and beautiful throws. There is another important rule in basketball. A team must leave its side of the field no later than 8 seconds after it has taken possession of the ball. This allows teams not to sit out in their own half.

TRIPLE DOUBLE a player sets a two-digit value in three statistical indicators. In basketball, there are five main game actions that are counted. These are blocks, points, rebounds, steals, and assists. Each player on the field specializes in something different. For example, an offensive guard scores a lot of points, a point guard scores a lot of assists, a center player can score a lot of rebounds, and so on. But a triple-double is a single player scoring double digits in three out of five receptions in a single game. Most often, these can be points, assists,or rebounds, although sometimes block shots can be used instead of rebounds. A triple-double is an indicator of class and a very good game of a basketball player.

TWO-POINT SHOT any successful roll that earns two points. Basketball has a very simple scoring system. Two points are awarded for all successful shots made from the game and made from a distance of less than 6.75 meters (at this distance there is a three-point line). Thats all you need to know about distances. Any successful shot closer to the three-point mark adds 2 points to the team. Less in basketball is awarded only for shots from the penalty line. Even for dunks, the team is entitled to 2 points, although these are shots from the closest distance. In any basketball game, the number of two-point shots exceeds the number of three-point shots. Mostly because they are easier to decide on and less likely to miss.

UNSPORTSMANLIKE FOUL this is a foul that is not related to the fight for the ball. It is awarded if the referee considers that the player did not try to play the ball. Such a foul is recorded on the account of the guilty basketball player, and the opposite side is entitled to one free throw. Several such fouls can result in a player being removed from the field without being able to return to it. Unsportsmanlike behavior is mainly a problem of individual players who try to play tricks in a way that would be contrary to the rules and spirit of the game.

USUALLY THE FIRST NUMBER OF THE COMMAND this is the player with the lowest height. On average, the usual height for this role is 175-190 cm, although there are cases when basketball players with a height of more than 2 meters played in this position.

WITH A DRIBBLER they call a player who drives the ball very skillfully and has excellent technique. A basketball player can control the ball exactly as long as he leads it. When a player stops dribbling, he must give the ball to another player or throw it into the basket, otherwise it will be considered a violation. It is also forbidden to hold the ball for too long, making more movements than allowed by the rules. Dribbling is dribbling the ball and hitting it alternately on the floor. During training, a lot of time is devoted to this, as fast ball handling is an extremely important game skill for any basketball player.

ZASLON this is a technique that can be found in various game sports. In basketball, players use it to cover their teammate, preventing the opponent from knocking the ball out of him. Simply put, this is an attempt to close your partner and give him the opportunity to throw the ball into the basket without hindrance. As a rule, the barrier is applied already in the immediate vicinity of the basket and from a position where it is possible to get into it. With a double barrier, the player is covered on both sides. If this is done correctly, the opponent is temporarily unable to reach the player with the ball. Sometimes players block a player who has not yet received the ball, but is potentially more likely to do so.

ZONE PROTECTION defense, in which players defend the free throw zone under their basket. With such a defense, each player of the team is assigned to a certain area, on which he can counteract any player. With this arrangement, the defense becomes more organized, since every basketball player knows where to run and what to do there. With zone defense, the same basketball player can counteract different players in his zone, because the location of the attacking basketball players can change slightly with each attack. There are different options for zone protection, and they are analyzed in more detail by the teams coach, who organizes various schemes.

banana a block shot. A basketball trick in which a player blocks an opponents throw into the basket without violating the rules. This is usually done by front-line players. A block shot is an important technique that allows you to block the opponents throw and start your attack. Most often, it is performed when throwing from an average distance, when the ball is in close proximity to the basketball shield. Depending on the range of the throw, block shots can also be made in different ways. For example, a long-range throw can be blocked if a player can reach the ball while jumping.

blocking creating obstacles to the movement of an opponent who does not own the ball. Refers to violations of the rules. Blocking a player without the ball is a violation of the rules. Although power wrestling is allowed in basketball, it is forbidden to actively use your hands to create obstacles for your opponent. Such blockages may result in the player re-committing fouls. The rules of basketball allow players to actively fight for the ball, but pushing opponents, blocking their movement with their hands or feet is strictly prohibited.

brick bad shot in basketball. An unsuccessful throw is called a throw after which the ball did not hit the ring. It may have hit the handle and bounced into or out of the field. There is also an option that the ball bounced off the basketball shield. If the ball does not touch either the basket or the shield at all, then such a throw is called differently. Often a brick can be seen when making a three-point throw. It is always accompanied by a beautiful flight of the ball to the basket, but the ball is not always in the ring. Often, players make a three-point shot when they do not see the attack continuing. Sometimes an error occurs when throwing from a medium distance. Even a throw from the penalty line without resistance is also not always accurate.

declarer a backline player who acts as a team manager. The point guard is the first number of the team. He creates the attacks of his team, and also takes care of the players near the penalty line. Due to its often small size, this player is one of the fastest on the court. He can make very fast passes, drive the ball fast, and make lightning-fast passes. Almost all point guards have an excellent three-point shot.

defender 1) a player of the defending team; 2) a player of the back line of the attack. There are no obvious defensive players in basketball. This is a dynamic game, attack and defense are made by the whole team. A defender is a player who plays for a team that is currently defending its own half of the field. He plays where he belongs in his role. For example, a center fielder plays directly under the ring. He does this both offensively and defensively. The second value is the player of the back line of attack. As a rule, this is one of the lowest players in the team, whose functions are to organize transfers to partners. You can compare him to a playmaker in football. Sometimes such a player makes his own shots. Often you can see a shot from behind the three-point line.

draft an inaccurate throw where the ball doesnt even touch the shield or basket handle. This throw is considered very unsuccessful, since the 24-second counter is not reset in this case, and it is very difficult to fight for such a ball. It can be picked up by anyone, including the opponent. Such an inaccurate throw is rarely made at close range, except in amateur basketball. Most often, a draft can occur when throwing from behind the three-point zone.

hook throw with one hand on a high trajectory. This is a throw that is sometimes used as an alternative solution in an attack. It is sometimes used by center players. This is also a good solution in a situation where a normal throw is difficult to perform. The fact is that it is almost impossible to block the hook. The ball is first pulled back with the hand a little, and then sent in a circular motion into the ring. Since the ball is flying on a high trajectory, there is a fairly good chance that it will fall directly into the ring. The hook should not be performed if the other player is behind you. In this case, he may have time to knock out the ball when the basketball player brings his hand up for a throw.

paint trapezoid zone in basketball, located directly in front of the ring and extending all the way to the free throw line. A basketball player of the attacking team can stay in this zone for no more than three seconds. This rule forces players to move more and not wait for a pass, being right near the ring. Thats why there are a lot of runs into this area with subsequent attempts to throw the ball from close range. A paint shot is almost guaranteed two points. However, in the same zone, defenders are very active, performing rebounds and blocking shots.

pot the same as the block shot. This word is called blokshot in colloquial vocabulary. This is a game move that blocks the opponents throw. To do this, the defender must cover the ball with his hand at the time of making the throw, after which it changes its trajectory. Perhaps thats why the blockshot was called a pot. Of course, not every hit can be blocked. Block shots are performed by almost all players of the team, but depending on the role, someone performs more pots. As a rule, this is better done by the tallest players of the team. They are the ones who, due to their height and long arms, can block the maximum number of throws.

quarter a game period of time in basketball. One quarter lasts 10 minutes in European championships, 12 minutes in the NBA. This is the net game time that the teams have to play. Timeouts, delays, and other non-game moments dont count, so in fact one quarter is much longer than its actual time. There is a two-minute rest period between the quarters, and a big fifteen-minute break between the halves of the match. The first two quarters are called the first half of the game, and the last two are called the final half, during which all the most interesting things happen.

roaster all players on the same basketball team. Each basketball team has its own roster. These are all the players who are part of it. At the same time, up to twelve people are registered for the game, and only 5 can play on the site. Thus, each team forms the so-called main team. It includes the most powerful players. selection the most important element of the basketball game, which consists in picking up the ball after an unsuccessful two-point, three-point or free throw. The team that wins rebounds makes more attacks, which means it potentially has a chance to get more points. This technique is most often performed by the largest players of the team-center and heavy forwards. The higher a players height, the more potential they have for a successful rebound game. Usually rebounds in basketball are divided into two types: in defense and in attack. Both make a big difference. For example, winning a rebound in an attack allows you to make a second throw if the first one turned out to be unsuccessful. If you pick up the ball in defense, you can prevent the opponent from gaining points and simultaneously start their attack. The center players with the greatest height are the most successful in this technique. In addition, they play directly under the ring, so they do not need to change their position.

shield a mandatory element of a basketball game that is directly attached to the basket.
