Ice hockey STANLEY CUP the main trophy of the National Hockey League. Initially, the Stanley Cup was played between amateur teams in Canada. The prize first found its owner in 1893. They became the team "Montreal AAA". This year is the starting point of the great history of the main hockey trophy in North America. The founder of the prize, which was originally called the Hockey Challenge Cup, was the Governor General of Canada, Frederick Arthur Stanley Preston. It is his name that now bears the Stanley Cup. In 1910, teams of professionals began to compete for the prestigious trophy. And since 1927, only NHL clubs could victoriously raise the Stanley Cup over their heads. After the regular season, eight teams from each conference are determined to compete for the main trophy of the National Hockey League. Playoff series are played up to four wins. The conference winners in the final series determine the Stanley Cup winner. The names of hockey players who were lucky enough to win the grand prize of the National Hockey League are engraved on the cup rings (the unique design of the trophy is recognizable all over the world). In 1991, there was no room left for engraving. The organizers of the competition decided to replace the tapes, and install the dismantled parts in the Hall of Fame.
